Refresh Owl is a browser extension that reloads tabs on a schedule and can alert you when text on a page changes. It is built to work without collecting personal data.
What stays on your device
- Your refresh settings (intervals, active hours, alert words) are stored in your browser's local extension storage.
- Page content. When you turn on a text alert, the extension reads the visible text of that tab after each refresh to look for your words. This only happens on sites you have explicitly granted access to. The text is checked on your device and is never stored or transmitted.
- Your license key, if you buy Pro, is stored in local extension storage.
What is sent over the network
The only network requests Refresh Owl makes are to our payment and licensing provider, Polar (polar.sh), to activate and periodically validate a Pro license key. These requests contain your license key, an activation label (the browser name and date) and our organization ID. No browsing history, page content or URLs are sent.
When you buy Pro, Polar processes your payment as merchant of record. Its handling of your payment details is covered by Polar's privacy policy. We receive your email address and purchase details from Polar so we can provide support.
What we don't do
- No analytics, tracking pixels or advertising.
- No selling or sharing of data with third parties.
- No remote code: all of the extension's code ships inside the package you install.
Permissions explained
- tabs: to reload the tabs you choose and show their titles in the extension.
- alarms: to schedule refreshes in the background.
- storage: to save your settings locally.
- notifications: to show alerts.
- scripting and optional site access: to read page text for alerts, only on sites you approve.
- offscreen: to play an alert sound.
Your choices
You can revoke site access at any time from Chrome's extension settings. Uninstalling the extension deletes all of its local data. To have us delete purchase records, email us.
